- Use a Hacksaw to Cut the Pipe
Cut the desired length of pipe with a straight edge. Ensure that all joints are cut at the correct angles. The cut should be precise to avoid a skewed joint and destroyed project.
- Deburr the Inside Edges
Deburr the inside of the pipe by cleaning all shavings out of the edges. You should double check that the length is correct before continuing your project. Always measure twice, cut once, and check to make sure everything will fit properly. One of the easiest ways to botch a PVC pipe installation project is to make a simple mistake at the beginning or fail to check length.
- Prime and Cement
Use primer to clean the inside edges of the pipe. An all-purpose cleaner will make the pipe ready to cement. The cement used for PVC pipe dries very quickly, and you only have one chance to get it right. Get all materials ready, coat the inside of the joint with cement, put in the pipe, and do your best to turn the pipe one full rotation before the cement sets. Double check that the cement covered the entire joint and there are no unprotected areas that could potentially turn into cracks later on.
- Pipe Hanger Installation
The final step for PVC pipe installation is to ensure pipe hangers to hold the pipe. As a general rule, it is best to use a pipe hanger every four feet to provide necessary support. Also, be cognizant of materials such as nails or screws that could potentially corrode the pipe over time.
